After reading your question and analysis of your own question, there really isn't a whole lot more to add. I completely agree that umpires can affect the outcome of a close game, no doubt about it. I think in general, Major League umpires do a good job and get most of the calls correct, with the exception of the terrible interpretation of the strike zone.
If the umpires won't call balls and strikes as stated in the rule book, what is the point of having a defined strike zone or rules at all? I think that replay should be used on any questionable call until the correct decision is made. No team deserves to win or lose because of a missed call.
I think evaluation of umpires should be more strict and those not correctly calling a certain percentage of their plays (a very high percentage), should be relieved of his duties. People get fired in other lines of work when not performing up to certain standards. Umpires should be held accountable as well.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
